This week’s memory verse from Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan is Romans 5:8. This verse declares that God demonstrated His love for us in Christ dying for us while we were still sinners.
Very rarely for even a righteous person will someone dare to die (Romans 5:7), yet Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Though there is not one of us that is righteous in and of ourselves (Romans 3:10), Jesus gave His life for us, that we might be saved. How great is the love that would do this! How overwhelming to know that we are cared for in such a way by the King of Kings!
God gave us the best He had to offer. He didn’t spare His own Son, but gave Him up for all of us (Romans 8:32). He proved beyond a shadow of a doubt just how greatly He loves us. It is our privilege to enter into relationship with Him – to be His children, and to be able to call Him our Heavenly Father.
Know that you are loved by the Most High! He loves you so much that while you were still a sinner, He sent His Son to give His life for you, to redeem you. He has bestowed lavish love upon you, in calling you His son or daughter (1 John 3:1). Rest in the assurance of His amazing affection!
We’ve all heard many times that God loves us, but how can we know for sure that this is true? What is our proof of His affection?
Romans 5:8 informs us that God’s love for us was demonstrated in this – that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Think about that for a moment – God sent Jesus to give His life for us while we were as yet sinners. He loved us so much that He didn’t want us to have to pay the price merited by our wrongdoings, so He sent Jesus to take upon Himself the punishment that we deserved. He sought us before we ever sought after Him. What greater proof of God’s unsurpassed love for us could we possibly receive?
Here are some verses that further reveal the depth and intensity of God’s wonderful love for us, as demonstrated through Christ’s work at the cross:
- He loved us so much that He gave His one and only Son, that if we believe in Him, we might have eternal life (John 3:16).
- He did not spare His own Son, but freely gave Him up for us all (Romans 8:32).
- None has greater love than the one who lays down his life for his friends
(John 15:13), and God sent Jesus to lay down His life for us.
- Though we had gone our own way, God laid upon Christ all of our iniquity
- He made us alive with Christ because of His great love for us, even when we were dead in transgressions (Ephesians 2:4-5).
The fact that God sent Jesus to give His life for us, while we were still sinners, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt God’s unalterable love for us. He loved us at our worst, giving the best He had, that we might be redeemed. Let’s give thanks to God for His unrivaled affection!
