Making Wise Media Choices, and Spending Time In God’s Word

Making Wise Media Choices, and Spending Time In God's WordWeek 33 of Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan is nearly finished. This week’s reading was Philippians 1-4, and Colossians 1. These chapters cover Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi, and begin his letter to the church at Colossae.

Philippians 4:8 tells us what kind of things to be thinking about – whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy. One thing that affects our thoughts in a greater way than we may sometimes think is our choice of media. What are we watching and listening to? What are we reading online? Does it match up with the kind of thing Philippians 4:8 says that we should be thinking about?

What goes in our eyes and ears often ends up in our minds and hearts, and what’s in our heart will come out in our life. Therefore, our media choices often impact us more than we may imagine.

An excellent choice of what to be filling our minds with is God’s Word. It truly possesses all of the qualities mentioned in Philippians 4:8, and Psalm 1:2-3 says that those who meditate on and delight in the Word of God will prosper in whatever they do! Let’s be intentional about making wise media choices, make sure to spend time in God’s Word!

10 More Scriptures To Remember Throughout The Week

10 More Scriptures To Remember Throughout The Week

As we go about our daily lives, it is important to take time to remind ourselves of what God has to say to us in His Word. Here are 10 more scriptures to keep in mind as you go about your week:

  1. Romans 8:28 – In all things, God works for your good, because you love Him, and have been called according to His purpose!
  2. Joshua 1:5 – Because God is on your side, all the days of your life, none will be able to stand against you!
  3. Romans 8:38-39 – Nothing and no one can separate you from the amazing love of God!
  4. Joshua 1:9 – Wherever you go, God is with you!
  5. Psalm 1:2-3 – Those who meditate on and delight in God’s Word will prosper in all that they do!
  6. Romans 8:37  – Always remember that you are MORE than a conqueror in Christ!
  7. Zephaniah 3:17 – You are incredibly special to your Heavenly Father! He rejoices over you with singing. Listen to His song of joy, rather than the lies of the devil!
  8. Romans 8:1 – Don’t constantly condemn yourself over mistakes you have made, for there is no condemnation for you, because you are in Christ!
  9. Psalm 45:12 – Because of the favor of God that is upon you in Christ, people of wealth seek your favor!
  10. Colossians 2:10 – Longing for something or someone to make you feel complete? Know that you are already complete in Christ!

Which of these verses encourages you the most?

Live In His Grace

Live In His GraceWeek 30 of Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan is nearly finished. This week’s reading was 2 Corinthians 11-13, and Galatians 1-2. These chapters finish one of Paul’s letters to the church at Corinth, and begin his letter to the church at Galatia.

In Galatians 1:6-7, Paul expresses astonishment at the church of Galatia so quickly deserting he who called them to live in the grace of Christ, and turning to a different gospel, which was really no gospel at all.

We have been called to live in the grace of Christ, but how often do we turn from His grace, and try to become right with God through the law – by obedience to His commandments – instead of accepting righteousness as a free gift, as God intended it? No matter how hard we try, we can never be good enough to gain right standing before God through our actions. God knows that we can’t do it on our own, which is why He wants us to live under the new covenant of His grace.

In Galatians 2:21, Paul says that he will not set aside God’s grace, for if we could gain righteousness by the law, then Christ died for nothing. In other words, if we can be good enough on our own to earn right standing before God, then there was no reason for Christ to die for us. Don’t set aside the grace of God! You were saved by grace (Ephesians 2:5). Continue to live in it!

You Can . . .

You Can . . .Many allow the ways of the world to determine how they live their lives. Romans 12:2 tells us, however, not to be conformed to the pattern of this world, but to be transformed by renewing our mind.

Just because everyone’s doing it doesn’t mean that you have to. Here’s a list of things that you CAN do, though they are contrary to the world’s way of doing things:

You can . . .

  • think for yourself, trusting the Spirit of Truth to guide you into all truth (John 16:13), rather than simply believing everything modern culture would try to tell you.
  • do things God’s way, rather than following the ways of man.
  • take charge of your own life, and follow the path that God has for you, instead of following the path that the majority of those around you are following, simply because it’s what everyone else is doing.
  • read God’s Word, and believe His truth instead of falling for the lies of the world.
  • find your fulfillment in God’s love for you, rather than this world’s empty promises.

Dare to stand out, living your life according to what God says. Instead of conforming yourself to the pattern of the world, allow your mind to be renewed to His way of doing things!

Study It Out In God’s Word

Study It Out In God's WordWeek 19 of Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan is drawing to a close. This week’s reading was Acts 16-20. These chapters speak of the ministry of the Apostle Paul.

Acts 17:10-12 speaks of the Berean Jews, declaring them to be of more noble character than those in Thessalonica.  They received Paul’s message eagerly, and studied the Scriptures daily to see if what he said was true. Many of them believed, as a result.

Like the Jews from Berea, it behooves us to take what others are telling us concerning God’s Word, and study it out for ourselves. It is vital that we have a firsthand knowledge of God’s Word, and base our beliefs upon what it says, rather than simply accepting every teaching we hear at face value.

What we believe about God – about who He is, and how we are to relate to Him – is very important. Our beliefs are the driving force that determines the course of our lives. They can be the difference between living a life of fear and defeat, and a life of freedom and victory. Considering this, it is of high importance that we spend time in the Word of God, which alone is truth (John 17:17), with the request to be given a spirit of wisdom and revelation, that we might know Him better (Ephesians 1:17).

Rather than simply accepting everything we hear, let’s take what we are told, and study it in God’s Word for ourselves, allowing ourselves to be taught by the Spirit of Truth (John 16:13). It is a privilege to be able to enter into relationship with our Heavenly Father. Let’s take time to invest in that relationship, getting to know Him better through the pages of His inspired Word (2 Timothy 3:16)!

Above All Else

Above All ElseBible Reading and Memorization Plan memory verse switch – This week’s verse will be Proverbs 4:23 instead of Joshua 1:9.

Proverbs 4:23 bids us to guard our hearts above all else, for everything we do – all the issues of life – flows from it.

Our hearts determine our life’s course. What is inside of us – what we truly believe, and our perception and perspective – directly influences all that we do and say. Our mindsets impact our actions greatly, and our mouths speak out of the abundance of what’s in our hearts (Luke 6:45).

Because of this, it is exceedingly important that we are on guard as to what we let into our hearts. What goes in will come out in our lives at some point, and in some way. The people we surround ourselves with, and that which we consistently spend time on, have a tendency to greatly affect our viewpoints and values, and in turn, our lives. For example, if those who are closest to us place a high importance on something, we will be more likely to do so as well. If they adopt a certain habit or custom, there’s a greater chance that we will adopt it too. That which we are constantly hearing and seeing will often get into our hearts, and become what we fixate on and accept as the norm.

Considering how greatly what we surround ourselves with impacts our mindset and focus, and how often it finds its way into our hearts, it behooves us to spend time in God’s Word, and around people who value what He has to say. As we fill our hearts with the words of our Heavenly Father, they will become what comes out of our mouths, and what we act upon. They will begin to produce fruit in our lives.

Above all else, remember to guard your heart, for what is found within it directly impacts the rest of your life.

5 Tips for Reading and Memorizing God’s Word

5 Tips for Reading and Memorizing God's WordSpending time in God’s Word is a vital part of growing in our relationship with our Heavenly Father. It helps us get to know Him better, and learn more about His amazing love and grace. When going about reading and memorizing Scripture, it helps to have a plan. For direction and guidance in diving into the Word of God, check out Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan.

Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan was designed keeping in the mind the fact that sometimes life just happens, and there are days when flexibility is needed. It was meant to provide a readily practicable plan of action for reading through the New Testament in a year, and memorizing key verses from God’s Word. 1-2 chapters are suggested for reading each weekday – leaving time on the weekends either to catch up on missed chapters, or review favorite verses from throughout the week  – and one scripture memory passage is given per week.

Even with the best of plans, however, there are still some days that don’t turn out the way we thought they would. What do you do on the days when nothing goes as planned? Here are 5 tips for fitting Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan to your everyday life:

  1. Keep going – If you fall behind schedule, don’t throw in the towel! Keep on following the plan, and catch up a little bit at a time. (As mentioned above, the weekends are a great time to catch up on missed chapters. If you skip a memory verse, add it to a week when the original memory verse is easier.)
  2. Finish later – If you want to spend time in God’s Word in the morning, but don’t have time for the entire day’s reading, simply read a few verses when you wake up, and finish the rest later on.
  3. Set a reminder – Set a reminder on your phone – or another electronic device – to help you remember to do your scripture reading and memorization.
  4. Take a moment – For an easy way to memorize the week’s memory verse, write it out on an index card, and place it somewhere where you will see it often. Every time you pass by it, take a moment to repeat the verse to yourself. Pretty soon you will have it memorized!
  5. Write it out – Write out the memory verse for the week once each day with pen and paper. It doesn’t take long to do so, and it will help you commit it to memory.

God’s Word

God's WordPsalm 119:103 declares that the words of our Heavenly Father are sweeter than honey. Psalm 19:7 says that His law is perfect, and it refreshes our souls. Psalm 119:15 speaks of meditating on His precepts.

Spending time with God is a vital part of our lives as believers. Our relationship with our Heavenly Father is the most important relationship we will ever experience. He knows us better than anyone else ever could, and cares for us deeply. We are His children, whom He dearly loves. He wants to give each of us a fresh revelation of His amazing love and grace.

Reading God’s Word is one way for us to get to know Him better. As we read it, we learn more about who He is, and how much He loves us. We gain a better understanding of all that Christ accomplished for us at the cross. We find God’s promises to us, telling of the many blessings that are ours in Christ. The purpose of reading God’s Word, therefore, isn’t to fulfill a religious obligation. It is for our benefit, to help us grow in our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Memorizing scripture is another thing that is of great benefit to us as believers. As we go about our daily lives, verses that we have memorized can provide much-needed reminders concerning the truths of God’s Word. When we have memorized verses from the Bible, we can readily recall them for our encouragement in times of discouragement. The Word of God directly applies to our lives in many ways, making scripture memory a thing of great value.

Reading and memorizing God’s Word impacts our lives in a significant way. In reading the Bible, we learn more about the One who knows us best, and loves us most. Memorizing verses enables us to bring to mind the God-breathed words of Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16) when we need them. The Source of Knowledge

knowledgeIn Romans 10:2, Paul speaks of those who have a zeal for God, yet that zeal isn’t in accordance with knowledge. Some of us truly do have a zeal for the things of God. We want to follow Him – to walk in the way He would have us to go. Our heart is in the right place. However, Proverbs 19:2 tells us that it isn’t good to be without knowledge, and Hosea 4:6 states that God’s people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. It is imperative, then, that we add knowledge to our zeal.

Where is this knowledge found? Proverbs 2:6 informs us that wisdom is given by God, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. To gain true knowledge, therefore, we must turn to God. We must open His Word for ourselves and find out what He really says, asking Him to give us an understanding of what we’re reading. We must listen to His voice as He reveals things to us, inviting Him to show us who He is.

Open your heart to the Source of knowledge. Ask God to give you, as stated in Ephesians 1:17 (NASB) ” . . . a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.” Keep your mind open to what He may have to share with you in His Word, listen for His voice speaking to your heart, and watch Him reveal Himself to you in a greater way than ever before.
