Grace and Godliness

Grace and GodlinessWeek 38 of Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan is nearly finished. This week’s reading was 2 Timothy 4, Titus 1-3, and Philemon. These chapters finish Paul’s letter to Timothy, a partner in sharing the gospel, and include his letters to Titus and Philemon.

Titus 2:11-12 states that the grace of God, which offers salvation to all people, has appeared. The grace of God teaches us to say no to ungodliness, and lead godly lives in this present age.

Sometimes, we think that if we truly proclaim the grace of God – the news that our standing before God isn’t based on our efforts and our actions, good or bad, but on what Christ has done for us – people will feel like it gives them a license to sin. These verses, ¬†however, teach the complete opposite. The say that it is God’s grace that teaches us to say no to ungodliness, and to live godly lives.

When we really recognize and accept the truth of God’s grace, it begins to transform us from the inside out. It starts by changing our thinking from a religious mindset of dos and don’ts to an actual relationship with God. This change is reflected in the way we live our lives.

Look at it this way – have you ever had somebody tell you not to do something you normally wouldn’t do anyway, but after being told to avoid it, you began to really desire to do it? This is the way the law works. The very commandment not to do something often stirs up within us a desire to do the thing we are told not to do. God’s grace, on the other hand, draws us to live in a godly manner based out of a relationship with God, for the closer we draw to Him, the more we become like Him!

God’s grace doesn’t give us a license to sin. It teaches us to say no to ungodliness, and draws us to live godly lives out of love to our Heavenly Father. Ask God today to reveal His grace to you in a greater way than ever before!
