1 John 4:19 tells us that we love because God first loved us. It is out of our understanding of His love for us that our love for Him springs. It is His love flowing through us that enables us to show love to those around us.
The first and greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and the second is like it – to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40). However, there are times when our love for God may fall short of this standard, and people whom we may have a hard time loving. If we are trying in our own strength to truly love God and others, we will never be able to do so perfectly.
The good news is that it isn’t about our love, but rather God’s love for us! When we begin to truly understand the width and length, and height and depth of the love of Christ (Ephesians 3:18), we will begin to fall in love with Him. We won’t have to struggle or strive to love Him more. Our love for Him will be a natural response to His love for us.
As we are filled with the knowledge of the love of God, that love will overflow from us to those around us. We’ll find ourselves freely giving out the love that we have freely received (Matthew 10:8). It won’t be about us endeavoring to show love in our own strength, but rather about God’s love flowing through us.
Today, fix your eyes on the amazing affection of your Heavenly Father! As you focus on His great love for you, you will begin to love Him and others in return.
