The Grace of God

The Grace of GodWeek 2 of Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan is nearing it’s end. The scripture reading for this past week was Matthew 9-14. These chapters portray some of the differences between the grace of God shown by Jesus, and the religious mindset of the day. They relate some of Jesus’ words to His disciples, parables He told, and more of the miracles He performed.

Through Moses the law was given, but through Christ came grace and truth (John 1:17). Jesus came to establish, through His death at the cross, the new covenant of God’s grace – His undeserved, unearned, unmerited favor. He clearly demonstrated God’s heart of love for us.

  • When a paralyzed man was brought to Jesus, He assured the man that his sins were forgiven, and healed him (Matthew 9:1-8).
  • He called Matthew, the tax collect, to be His disciple (Matthew 9:9).
  • He ate dinner with tax collectors and sinners (Matthew 9:10).
  • When a woman with an issue of blood touched His garment, He took notice of her, though she was considered unclean because of her affliction (Leviticus 15:25), and declared that her faith had healed her (Matthew 9:22).
  • He healed a man with a withered hand, though it was the Sabbath
    (Matthew 12:9&13).
  • Though He withdrew to a solitary place, a large crowd followed Him. When He saw them, He had compassion on them, and healed the sick among them
    (Matthew 14:13-14).

These are some of the ways that Jesus demonstrated to us the true heart of our Heavenly Father towards us – His love for us, and the unmerited favor we have received from Him. The idea of God’s grace, however, was completely counterculture to the religious mindset of the time. The Pharisees tried to find ways to accuse Jesus, and John the Baptist’s disciples questioned Him (Matthew 9:14-17). The concept of the grace of God still goes against the grain of religious culture today. There are many who feel that they must earn acceptance before God, and all of His blessings, through their own efforts. God, however, offers us a relationship with Him, and His many good gifts, freely in Christ. Let’s accept our position as His child as a gift of His amazing grace, the way He intended it to be!

God’s Word

God's WordPsalm 119:103 declares that the words of our Heavenly Father are sweeter than honey. Psalm 19:7 says that His law is perfect, and it refreshes our souls. Psalm 119:15 speaks of meditating on His precepts.

Spending time with God is a vital part of our lives as believers. Our relationship with our Heavenly Father is the most important relationship we will ever experience. He knows us better than anyone else ever could, and cares for us deeply. We are His children, whom He dearly loves. He wants to give each of us a fresh revelation of His amazing love and grace.

Reading God’s Word is one way for us to get to know Him better. As we read it, we learn more about who He is, and how much He loves us. We gain a better understanding of all that Christ accomplished for us at the cross. We find God’s promises to us, telling of the many blessings that are ours in Christ. The purpose of reading God’s Word, therefore, isn’t to fulfill a religious obligation. It is for our benefit, to help us grow in our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Memorizing scripture is another thing that is of great benefit to us as believers. As we go about our daily lives, verses that we have memorized can provide much-needed reminders concerning the truths of God’s Word. When we have memorized verses from the Bible, we can readily recall them for our encouragement in times of discouragement. The Word of God directly applies to our lives in many ways, making scripture memory a thing of great value.

Reading and memorizing God’s Word impacts our lives in a significant way. In reading the Bible, we learn more about the One who knows us best, and loves us most. Memorizing verses enables us to bring to mind the God-breathed words of Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16) when we need them. Shine

ShineThis week’s memory passage from Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan is
Isaiah 60:1-3. These verses bid us to arise and shine. They inform us that though darkness covers the earth, the Lord’s glory appears upon us, and many will come to our light.

Though the world around us is dark, we shine forth the light of God. His love and favor are on our lives as His children. The knowledge of this love and favor makes us shine in a way that attracts those around us. They will notice that there’s something different about us, and want what we have.

We are not of the night or the darkness. We are children of the light and the day
(1 Thessalonians 5:5). We have been called out of the darkness, and into our Heavenly Father’s marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). He is our light and salvation (Psalm 27:1). Our light comes from Him. We reflect His brightness to a dark world, pointing them to the One who is the Light of the World (John 8:12).

You are a light in a dark place! Many will be drawn to the light of God’s love and favor that shine upon you in Christ. Know and believe that His glory will be seen upon you!

Ask and You Will Receive

Ask and You Will ReceiveThe first week of Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan is drawing to a close. This week’s reading was Matthew 3-8. These chapters spoke mainly of Jesus’ baptism, the beginning of His ministry, the Sermon on the Mount, and some of the miracles that He performed.

Matthew 7:7-11 addresses the topic of asking and receiving from our Heavenly Father. These verses assure us that those who ask receive, those who seek find, and that the door will be opened to those who knock. They use the example of a parent’s response to their child’s requests. If we, as humans, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will our wonderful Daddy in heaven give good gifts to us when we ask!

After reading in chapter 7 that those who ask will receive, Matthew 8 gives account of a number of people who presented differing requests to Jesus. They sought Him out for various reasons. A leper desired to be cleansed. A centurion was in need of healing for his servant. Many who were demon-possessed, or in need of healing, were brought to Him. His disciples cried out to Him to save them when they were in a boat, and a storm arose. Did any of these people fail to receive what they asked for? Did even one of those who sought Him fail to find that for which they came? When was the last time you asked God for something? What have you been requesting of Him lately? Do you know that He is both willing and able to meet all of your needs, both big and small?

Our Heavenly Father wants us, today, to ask of Him all that we need. He gives good gifts to those who ask (Matthew 7:11). Don’t be anxious about anything, but rather present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6), confident that you will see His provision in your life!

True Transformation

True TransformationNew Year’s is the time of year in which we make resolutions. We look back over the past year, and pinpoint areas in which we would like to improve. We get pumped up with excitement at the thought of another chance to get it right. Typically, we start out ok, and then, after a while, things begin to creep slowly downhill. Why does this happen? Why, year after year, do we continue to resolve to do things differently, yet all to often end up stuck in the same old rut?

The truth of the matter is, it’s impossible for us, in our own strength, to flawlessly carry out our resolutions for self-improvement. None of us are perfect. We all stumble in many ways (James 3:3). Only by remaining in Christ are we able to bear fruit, for we can do nothing apart from Him (John 15:4-5).

God isn’t after the modification of our behavior, but rather the transformation of our hearts. To experience real change in our lives, we need more than just an alteration of our actions. We are only truly transformed by understanding God’s amazing love and grace, and the truths of the good news of the gospel. When we begin to comprehend that it isn’t about what we have done or failed to do, but rather what Christ has done for us, the effects of this belief will show up in our actions. God’s love will flow through us, affecting every part of our lives.

This year, instead of focusing on your performance, fix your eyes on Jesus, and all that He has done for you. Allow God’s love and grace to truly transform you from the inside out!

God’s Goodness

God's GoodnessThis week’s memory verse for Called and Created’s Bible Reading and Memorization Plan is Jeremiah 29:11. This verse speaks of God’s plans for us. They are plans to prosper us, not to harm us. They are plans to give us hope and a future.

God has plans for your life. He hasn’t forgotten you or left you on your own. He will never leave nor forsake you
(Deuteronomy 31:6). He is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).

Our God is a good God. His plans for you are good. As your Heavenly Father, He has your interests at heart. He desires for you to live the best quality of life.

Here are some scriptures that speak of the goodness of our God:

  • He is the giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17).
  • He gives what is good to those who ask (Matthew 7:11).
  • We are invited to taste and see that He is good (Psalm 34:8).
  • The one who seeks Him will not lack any good thing (Psalm 34:10).
  • He is good, and His love endures forever (Psalm 107:1).
  • All the days of our lives, His goodness and love will follow us (Psalm 23:6).

This week, take courage in the fact that God’s plans for you are good. Place your trust in His amazing goodness and love!
